Agent behavior generation under environmental constraints: application to prospective urban development scenarios

Metropolises are constantly evolving and facing challenges such as rapid urban growth, mobility transitions, persistent congestion, and rising emissions. To address these issues, modeling tools like Activity-Based Models (AcBMs) can provide valuable decision support. However, current AcBMs still depend on rigid, pre-generated schedules that act as statistical mirrors of past travel surveys, treating urban space as a passive backdrop and struggling to capture how people adapt to new, unobserved situations. The objective of my PhD research is to develop an environment-driven AcBM grounded in affordance theory. In this framework, spatial entities (such as buildings) actively offer dynamic activity opportunities that agents (the city's inhabitants) evaluate dynamically, balancing their accumulating internal needs with multimodal accessibility. By shifting from an agent-centric paradigm to an environment-driven one, this approach enables within-day activity scheduling, making it possible to assess urban resilience against environmental disruptions (like urban flooding) and forecast behavioral shifts around future transit infrastructure.
